Indian Navy conquers North Pole
At Oslo
We called upon the Indian Ambassador, His Excellency Shri Mahesh Sachdev, who convened a press conference at his
residence on the 26th of March. It was a well attended affair with gastronomic delights being churned out by the
Ambassador’s kitchen. After the press conference, His Excellency officially flagged us off from Oslo and wished us
all success and god speed. We rounded off the rest of the time by soaking in the sun and snow and the amazing sights
of Oslo.
Longyearbyen.
27th March we left for the northernmost island group in the world, the Svalbard. An hour from Oslo, we entered the
Arctic Circle and flew further North into Tromso. A brief halt later, the aircraft flew off into the snow towards
the open ocean. Nearly 4 hrs after leaving Oslo, the sea beneath became glazed with pack ice and ice bergs.
Precipitous mountain peaks and tumbling glaciers filled up our horizons. We had entered a different world
altogether. Finally we landed at the Longyearbyen airport with a shudder. The outside temperature was minus 18 deg
C. We quickly donned our warm clothing and caps and gloves. We reached the picturesque Mary Ann’s Polarrigg hotel
where we would be staying for the next four days. The boundless mountains and the blue expanse of the fjord to the
North, kept us riveted. Now we are here, topping ourselves with food and water and conserving our bodies for the
onslaught in the days to come.

To hone our technical skills and to expose ourselves to the harshest of cold weather conditions, the ten of us were
put through an intense and exhaustive 45 days long winter survival and ski expedition camp in the upper reaches of
Gulmarg in the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The snow had been unprecedented in Gulmarg and when we landed in Srinagar
on 06 Jan 08, all roads to Gulmarg had been blocked and buried under deep snow. To us, it meant perfect weather
conditions. We trekked through waist deep sinking snow and climbed up to Gulmarg. We skied all day long with short
breaks in between and when the weather conditions worsened we simply lugged our oversized rucksacks and plodded on
the virgin trails. Nordic skiing, telemark techniques and ski touring techniques with bulging sleds being dragged
behind were practiced. There were prolonged periods of extreme blizzard conditions with zero visibility when all the
ski slopes and ski tracks were shut down by the Gulmarg authorities… and precisely on these days we would be found
dragging our heavy sleds through the raging snow and bone chilling cold from morning to night. We trained like
possessed.
Sonam showed extraordinary aptitude for Alpine Skiing and he was permanently attached with the Indian Army for the
Slalom runs. An outfall of the camp being that for the first time the Indian Navy team participated in the National
Winter Games. On completion of the Winter Games, the team returned to Delhi on 24 Feb 2008.
